HOW TO SELECT A SUP BOARD?

Choosing the right SUP board is super important. But lucky for you, we’ve prepared the perfect guide to help you select the right stand up paddleboard. Depending on how you plan on using it, you will need to look out for different things.

SUP HULL TYPES

The body or hull of a SUP affects its performance in the water. You can choose between a planning or displacement hull. And while either would work for beginners, both are suited for somewhat different activities. A planing hull is flat and wide, kind of like a surfboard. It is basically designed to ride on the water, making it ideal for surfing, leisure paddling, SUP yoga, and whitewater.

On the other hand, displacement hulls have a pointed front like a canoe or kayak. It cuts through the water and can go much faster than a planning hull. You can use SUP boards with displacement hulls for SUP touring, racing, camping, and even fitness paddling.

SOLID VS INFLATABLE SUPS

When it comes to construction styles, you also have two options – inflatable vs. hard paddle boards. The solid boards have an EPS foam core covered in fibreglass and epoxy. It is durable, lightweight and affordable. Plus, they are also available in plastic variants, but those are not as efficient. You should opt for a solid SUP, if:

  • Stability is important.
  • You want the perfect fit.
  • Performance is your top priority.
  • You have enough space to store it.

Inflatable SUP boards, on the other hand, have an air core and a PVC exterior. They are usually designed to be inflated around 12-15 pounds per square inch. You should get an inflatable version if:

  • You don’t have enough storage space.
  • You’re going hiking.
  • You need to travel a lot.
  • You want to use it for yoga.
  • You like whitewater paddling.

VOLUME & WEIGHT CAPACITY

Since you’ll be standing on it, the SUP board must be able to take on your body weight. Otherwise, you’ll fall off and hurt yourself. Board weight and volume are the prime factors for determining stability. The board’s volume in litres indicates how much weight it can hold. The higher the volume, the more weight it can support. Moreover, the board will have a weight capacity, and any person that doesn’t fit the criteria should not try to ride it. When calculating your weight, you need to include your body weight as well as the weight of any gear or accessories. These specs also relate to hull type. So long as you’re below the weight limit, planning hulls will work just fine, but displacements hulls aren’t so flexible. If you’re too heavy, the boards will sink, and if you’re too light, you’ll have trouble navigating. The point is, you’ll need to be just the right weight.

LENGTH & WIDTH

Longer boards are generally faster than shorter boards. Hence, shortboards are great for kids as well as for surfing. Medium-sized boards are excellent for just about anything, especially yoga. And longboards work well for long-distance touring and fast paddling. The longer ones usually come with displacement hulls, though, so you’ll need to watch out for weight. Stability also increases with width, but speed tends to decrease. Once again, you need to think of the type of paddling you want to do with it. For example, if you’re going on long tours, you can benefit from the extra storage that comes with wider boards. Additionally, yoga poses will also work best with a wider board because you’ll have more space. But that’s not all; you also need to look out for your own body type. If you’re a relatively petite person, the obvious would be to go for a narrower board since you might not be able to balance that well on a bigger board. But, of course, if you’re a beginner, you might want extra width to feel more secure.

SUP THICKNESS

Another factor affecting stand up paddleboard efficiency is the board thickness. Thicker boards have more volume and weight capacity than thinner ones, so you need to watch out for that when selecting the ideal SUP board for your water sport endeavours.

SUP FINS

Fins help with tracking and stability, so it makes sense to use larger fins with wider, longer boards to increase stability. Smaller fins provide better navigation. But most find are removable, so it’s all good. You can get single fins, a 3-fin setup, a 2+1 setup, and even inflatable fins for your inflatable SUP boards. Single fins provide minimal drag and good tracking, so they’re a great option for flatwater paddling. A thruster or 3-fin setup makes for straighter tracking and excellent surfing control. And while these fins are all the same size, the 2+1 fin setup features a larger central fin and two smaller fins on either side. For the inflatable SUP boards, you can get inflatable, flexible rubber fins.

ADDITIONAL ACCESSORIES

Now, depending on what you want to use your SUP boards for, you might want to get a few additional accessories. We recommend:

  • Bung straps or tie-downs for securing clothing, coolers and dry bags.
  • Mounts or attachment points for keeping seats, fishing rod holders, and cameras, etc.
  • A SUP paddle that is just the right size to ensure maximal efficiency.
  • A personal flotation drive (PFD) depending on the regulations in your area. The US Coast Guard actually classifies SUP boards as vessels in certain areas, and thus, you will be required to wear a PFD.
  • A proper wet or dry suit to avoid hypothermia when it’s cold.
  • Leash to keep you from falling off the board.
  • A car rack to transport your SUP board more conveniently.
